he City of Newport Beach will begin dredging and a small portion of the Newport Channel adjacent to Marina Park, the American Legion, and the 15th Street pier as of July 25. Construction will occur Monday through Saturday, during daylight hours, and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.
The Rhine Channel is located in the Cannery Village area and extends southeast from Lido Park Drive to 19th Street. The dredging project, to be performed in four phases, will remove an estimated 150,000 cubic yards of sediment. The dredged material will be transported via barge to the Port of Long Beach and will be safely reused as part of a port redevelopment project.
For the first three phases, the Rhine Channel will be closed during construction to provide room for the dredger’s barges and disposal scows. The contractor will make every effort to maintain a small, limited-access channel to accommodate visitors to local restaurants and shipyards. (Please see page 2 for the tentative project schedule.)
All vessels within the construction zone need to be removed and relocated by their owners. To assist boat owners, the City has made arrangements for free moorings throughout the harbor on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested boat owners should contact Harbor Patrol at 949-723-1002 for more information. Please note: Any vessels found blocking the dredge equipment may be towed at the owner’s expense.
